Embossing and debossing on packaging

Embossing and debossing on packaging

In a retail environment customers respond to tactile elements of packaging so these textured finishes like embossing and debossing are a great way to encourage interaction and achieve a sophisticated and high-end look and feel to your packaging.

Embossing creates a raised area in the packaging board and is commonly used for logos and braille (especially for medical packaging).

Debossing creates a recess in the surface of the packaging board and can be effectively combined with embossing to create all over patterns in the carton board.

The checkered texture visible on the cartons pictured above is an example of a bespoke pattern. We can work from your brief to create fully customised patterns with embossing and/or debossing. Alternatively, standard finishes can be created, such as a leather or a linen effect, as you can see on the close up image of the cosmetics carton below.

Blind embossing, where an area is embossed without introducing a contrasting colour, creates a more subtle effect and is also a popular choice.

For added impact, embossing can be combined with gloss effects or foil. This can give added depth to a foiled logo for example. The profile of an embossed area also creates more angles for light to bounce off, so more likely to catch the eyes of passers-by.
